It is a show that comes on the Investigation Discovery channel. They are doing a piece on the murder of Anne Scripps Douglas, the heiress, who was bludgeoned to death with a hammer by her husband Scott. They were particularly interested in the information that I had compiled on Scott Douglas. I had done some previous research on the case, but now I was determined to speak with the two most important ladies in his life: his mother and his girlfriend. So I began my quest to find Phyllis, the woman who was portrayed as Scott's dancer girlfriend in the movie "Our Mother's Murder". My conversation with the woman who answered the phone was a very interesting one. At first she did not want to talk to me. She told me that she was not Phyllis, but that she would pass along any message to her sister. We ended up having a conversation for a little over an hour as the woman reflected on the relationship between her sister and Scott Douglas. It was one of my most memorable interviews thus far. My goal was to get more at the heart of who Scott Douglas was. We know the movie version. We know about his temper. We know about the murder, but I wanted to go deeper. I wanted to know more about the pull that he had over women. So as I guided her through the conversation about the relationship between Scott and her sister, a new picture began to emerge of this man who had attracted so many women. Mind you, she does not believe that Scott killed Anne. She also does not believe that he committed suicide, and though we did not agree on those parts, she did give me some insight as to the kind of man Scott was as seen through the eyes of the people of Greenwich.

The Tale of Two Scotts

To Anne and her friends he showed a completely different side. As I listened to her describe Scott's personality, I quickly realized that there were indeed two Scotts. That is why we continue to hear conflicting stories about him that just do not make sense. To Anne's family and friends, he was standoffish, unfriendly, and unsure of himself. But, in his town of Greenwich, he was the man. Scott was cool, he was confident, he was charming, and he was a go getter. Phyllis is one of Scott's supporters, and there are some things that she wants to make known about Scott. She was the woman who was portrayed in the movie "Our Mother's Murder" as the dancer. She took offense at that portrayal stating : "She was not a dancer by trade." Scott did not know her when she was a dancer. She went on to reveal that she danced briefly in order to support her children. She needed a job that paid a lot of money, a job that was legal, and a job that would allow her time to pick up her children on time from school. It was the only job that could pay her the kind of money that she needed to make as quickly as she needed to make it.

Phyllis met Scott through another friend. He was living in a tent behind the main house because he did not get along with his stepfather. Scott's real father had passed away, and his mother had remarried a man who he did not like at all. He had a good relationship with his mother, but he and his stepfather fought all the time. So he lived in a tent out back near a golf course in the area. This was Scott's retreat. (This is one of the reasons that Anne's family never believed that he was dead when his car was found. They knew that he had very strong survival skills, and he was used to living outside.) He was down on his luck at the time that Phyllis met him. He did not have a business and he could not find a real job. He was not a carpenter by trade as indicated in the movie. He did have some carpentry skills, but his trade was painting. He was an amazing painter. He had learned painting from his father. He started out painting just to help people out. He also painted for his friends. He was the kind of man who would help anyone. He did not mind getting his hands dirty at all. One day he painted for Phyllis, and she was highly impressed. She told him that painting was what he should be doing for money. That was the business that he needed to start. So he started painting for a living. He gained more and more business through word of mouth, and this is how his painting business came to fruition. He was highly respected in Greenwich. Phyllis and Scott immediately hit it off. After her dancing days, Phyllis had been burned in a fire. Scott constantly told her how beautiful she was, and that he could not see her scars. He wanted to be with her.

On His Marriage to Anne

Now according to the girlfriend. Scott seemed to really love Anne, and that Scott never cheated on Anne in the apartment that he kept on the side. According to her, Scott only began staying in the apartment after the relationship started to sour. It is also untrue that Scott married Anne for the money. She said that sometimes he would joke around that she was the one with the money. But, not as if he married her for money, but rather, he had simply married a woman with money. She would see Scott frequently in Greenwich. He would always stop and talk to her. When the marriage started to go badly, he confided in her how Anne's family treated him. "He wasn't happy because they looked down on him. Even the girls, he hated them, because they were always calling him, and spying on him," the woman stated. She said that Scott told her that when the girls were not around, he and Anne got along perfectly. One evening she ran into Scott and Anne. He looked at her and smiled. They spoke for a bit, and she said that Anne grew a bit impatient. So as Anne was pulling him away, Phyllis watched them go into a strip club of some sort. It was a club right there on the avenue near a hamburger stand at the time. She said she was a little shocked that he was taking her there. She said that no one would ever believe it. But, that Anne had been seen many times in Scott's old neighborhood. It was a way to get away from her friends in Bronxville. (I did not get the sense that she was lying about the incident at all) She said that the movie did not even touch the surface of what was really happening between the girls and Scott. She also said that Anne's ex, Tony, constantly called the house under the guise of wanting to speak with his daughters, but that he would also say things to Scott to antagonize him. She advised Scott to get a divorce, and he stated that he couldn't because they would take Tori away from him.

He loved to be with older women. This is another issue Phyllis had with the media and the movie. She stated that Scott loved older women period. Anne was not the first older woman who Scott dated. Phyllis was also about 12 years older than Scott. She said that as far back as she could remember Scott always loved older women because he thought that women his age were "too silly". Scott really was an older man in a younger body. He was a homebody. He liked to stay home, and enjoy time with the one he loved. Phyllis also stated that before Scott married Anne, he had women literally chasing him. She remembers times when Scott would be visiting her at her home, and women would literally knock on the door. Scott would tell her to tell them that he was not home. They would have the best times just laughing about it. She never laughed harder with anyone as she laughed with Scott. (she was even laughing during our conversation) "He loved to laugh. He loved to cut up in front of people. He liked to make people think he was crazy. He just didn't care," She stated.

Scott's Suicide Aftermath

Phyllis was devastated when she received word that Scott may have committed suicide. She kept thinking that she wishes that she could have been there for him. To let him know that he was not alone, and that life was worth living no matter what. She stated that she did not know the details of his funeral services...only that the funeral was private and it was held an undisclosed location. She tried her best to make contact with Scott's family including his brother Todd. But, no one was answering the phone. They were not taking calls at all because they were upset by the way the media portrayed Scott. Sources say that Scott's mother Yolanda aka Violande hated the fact that the media made him seem "like such a bad person." So they stopped answering the phone, and I do not believe anyone has been able to make real contact with them. Thinking about Scott's death makes her sad even today. "I was in the neighborhood the other day, and I said that's where Scott used to live," the woman said nostalgically. At the end of our conversation, I thanked her for giving me the info that she did about the relationship between her sister and Scott Douglas. I asked her to please be sure to give my message to her sister Phyllis so that I could speak with her personally. The woman paused for a moment and stated "I am Phyllis."

Extra Tidbits

Scott’s family may have been Italian according to Phyllis. She could not remember for sure. Though, to me it appears that his family might be Polish. Still confirming...

One day Scott told her “Hey, I had a dream about you. I dreamed that you left everything behind and that you wanted to be with me.” This happened after she had already married another man. She said until that day, she had no idea that Scott really wanted to marry her.

Scott drank more than anything. He did “use”occasionally, but his main vice was alcohol...specifically, beer and vodka. He also had a habit of taking tranquilizers while he was drinking, which made him really act as though he was insane.

Everything that you have heard about Scott being a prolific lover is true. He was the best in bed. Once you have had an experience with him, you are hooked...unforgettable. (wonder if that is part of the hold that he had on Anne.)

She wanted everyone to know that Scott never put a hand on her, and that he was not the person she sees described in the papers and in the movie.

Photo of Scott Douglas

Anne and Scott in happier times

Reflecting on the Case of Scott Douglas

I've been thinking a lot about the case of Scott Stuart Douglas.
